Leica Black and White – Every Now & Then

I like to photograph in color.  I like to develop my photos in color.  It is just a personal preference.

Then there are just some days where black and white makes sense.  Yesterday was one of those days.  I can’t explian the urge.  I don’t know where it came from but I felt like saying the different tones i could capture .

Fremantle Port

So I set off down to one of my go to spots in Fremantle, the port.  Always lots of industrial comings and goings.  When I am shooting black and white I always prefer barren landscapes to the hustle and bustle of busy photos.

I hadn’t shot any black and white stuff on my Leica m240 yet so I decided to give it a go.

Shooting Black and White in Color

The major benefit in using today’s modern digital cameras and shooting black and white is that you have all the color filters built into the RAW image data.

You can boost the red tones or the blue tones in Adobe Lightroom and get a huge amount of information out of all the channels.  It provides for some very unique looks and I was looking forward to seeing how the m240 files would go being pushed.

Overall I was happy with the outcome.  I didn’t have a lot of time to explore but the shots I did get looked better inside Lightroom than I had expected.  A few adjustments here and there and they were good to go.

Do you prefer shooting black and white or color?  Is one better than the other?
