4. Room Tone

The Toe of the Framework:

Modern cinematography is evolving at break neck speed and if you want to stay on top of the new styles you need to start by embracing Room Tone.

The sensitivity of modern cameras has most people shooting with less and less light which means Room Tone education has been dropping off.  Controlling ambient light on set is paramount to success no matter what your lighting set up but it becomes even more crucial when embracing newer styles that direct much of the light levels to the toe of the sensor.

You need to give the sensor enough light to thicken the toe of the image while not spoiling the light in the rest of the scene.  At first it is a bit tricky to plan for and wrap your head around but give it a try next time you are on set and I think you'll see the benefits immediately.
