6. Salt & Pepper

The Last Piece of the Framework:

Salt and Peppering the frame is generally done in those last few minutes of lighting and framing tweaks.

It is something to keep in the back of your mind when scouting and on set when watching the blocking process.

Just keep looking at different ways to add highlights or to create interest across your frame.

Practice it enough and you'll find the skill will become second nature.

Important Frames:

1. The Natural Light

2. Adding the Sofhob slash

3. Add the Key Wrap

4. Salt & Pepper the BG

5. Add the Edge Light

Advanced Cinematography: On Set Training

I hope you enjoyed this basic look at what the Framework is and how it can help you improve your cinematography.

If you'd like to see how to apply these techniques on an actual job and watch over my shoulder as I talk you through my entire workflow in prep and on set than I suggest you check out my latest course:

Advanced Cinematography: On Set Training

This training gives you a unique opportunity to see how a DP works from start to finish on a commercial production.

We go over the treatment process, the location scout, tech scout, building the schedule, and finally we go on set with all of our plans and ideas and tackle the shots one by one.

You are there every step of the way to see how the images are constructed.

I am very proud of this course and if you are interested in levelling up your cinematography I would encourage you to check it out.
