Show Notes

In this episode of The Wandering DP Podcast we continue our break down of a recent commercial I shot on the RED Dragon paired with Arri Zeiss Super Speeds.

This commercial was unique in that we were limited to house power for our lighting set ups which means we had to choose our angles and locations wisely.

Below are images of the lighting set ups discussed in this podcast along with the images that coincide with the diagrams.

The Cafe:

Time of Day: 2:00PM

Keys to Success:  Again we had scouted the cafe beforehand and realized that the sun would be off the background later in the afternoon.  Due to scheduling we couldn’t be there any later than this so it was as good as we could manage.

The light of the background meant we could expose for the darker foreground and wouldn’t have to fill as much.  We didn’t have the filling power anyway.

The most important part of this shot was the angle we chose and the lens limiting the view outside.  Also the positioning of the talent meant we could use the window light as the key light.
